World Interfaith Harmony Week 2024

Islam: Art, Culture, and the Celebration of Diversity

As part of the World Interfaith Harmony Week lecture series, the Chavara Cultural Centre, Delhi hosted a special talk on 26 February 2024 by M. Behzad Fatmi, Secretary General of Indialogue Foundation, Delhi, on the theme “The Role of Art and Culture in Promoting Peace and Harmony in Islam.”

In his address, Mr. Fatmi emphasized that diversity is not accidental but divinely intended. Quoting the Holy Quran, he reminded the audience that God created different races and tribes “so that you may know one another.” Diversity, therefore, is meant to be understood, appreciated, and celebrated—not used as a basis for discrimination or division.

He further explained that love for the Creator naturally implies love for all of creation. True devotion to God, he stated, requires respecting and upholding the dignity of every human being, as well as showing care for animals and nature. This understanding transforms interfaith dialogue and social harmony into not just social responsibilities but religious duties.

Drawing from the life of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), Mr. Fatmi highlighted powerful examples of interfaith engagement, including instances where the Prophet welcomed Christians into his mosque and engaged in meaningful dialogue with people of other faiths. These examples, he noted, offer a timeless model for peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.Beyond theological foundations, Mr. Fatmi also addressed the practical necessity of dialogue in today’s interconnected world. In a globalized society, he emphasized, understanding one another is essential to prevent conflict and build sustainable peace.

He concluded by affirming that every effort—big or small—to promote reconciliation and harmony is valuable. Even if such efforts positively impact just one life, they contribute meaningfully to the larger goal of peace.

The session reinforced the Chavara Cultural Centre’s commitment to fostering interreligious understanding and demonstrated how Islamic teachings, when rooted in compassion and inclusivity, serve as powerful foundations for peace and harmony.
