In January 2022, as part of the annual celebration of India’s Republic Day on 26th January, the Chavara Cultural Centre, Delhi organized an online webinar titled “Republic Day – A Call to Be a Proud Indian. ” The event featured Cllr. Tom Aditya, Mayor of Bristol and
Bradley Stoke, UK, as the keynote speaker. Cllr. Tom Aditya, the first person of Asian and Indian heritage to hold such a civic office in South Gloucestershire, shared his inspiring journey in public service since 2007, serving as Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and Chairman of various committees. Reflecting on his attendance at India’s Republic Day celebrations in New Delhi in 2019, he vividly described the pride, vibrancy, and spirit of unity witnessed during the grand parade. In his address, he spoke about the framing of the Indian Constitution, emphasizing that it was inspired by India’s vast cultural and ethnic diversity. He highlighted that India’s identity lies in its “unity in diversity” and that the Constitution was crafted to connect all people, ensuring justice, equality, and opportunity for every citizen. He explained Indian secularism as a system that respects and recognizes all religions equally, fostering harmony rather than division. Cllr. Aditya also reflected on India’s historical journey and urged citizens to uphold constitutional values by eradicating superstitions, casteism, prejudice, and hatred. He expressed hope that India would continue to grow as a welcoming nation and a global leader, guided by the spirit of inclusiveness and justice enshrined in the Constitution. The webinar reaffirmed the Chavara Cultural Centre’s commitment to promoting national integration, constitutional values, and civic responsibility through dialogue and global engagement. It served as a meaningful reminder that being a proud Indian means living the ideals of unity, equality, and harmony every day.
