On 21st May 2023 at 6:30 PM, the Chavara Cultural Centre, Delhi organized a vibrant Manipuri Folk Dance Programme at YMCA, Delhi, as part of its ongoing mission to promote peace and harmony through cultural interaction and the revival of traditional art forms. Rooted in the vision of St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara, the Centre continues to foster interreligious dialogue and social harmony through art, culture, and shared heritage.

The programme began with an introduction to Manipuri dance, one of India’s classical dance traditions originating from Manipur. Known for its grace, devotion, and spiritual depth, Manipuri dance expresses profound religious experiences through delicate movements and rhythmic patterns. Rev. Fr. Dr. Roby Kannamchirayil CMI, Director of the Chavara Cultural Centre, delivered the welcome address, emphasizing the importance of preserving indigenous art forms as instruments of unity, mutual respect, and acceptance in society. The event was graced by Shri. K Sathish Namboodiripad, Director General of Doordarshan., who attended as the Chief Guest.

In his inaugural address, Shri K. Satish, IAS reflected on the transformative power of art, describing it as a force that destroys ego and fosters harmony. He highlighted how art transcends social, cultural, and ideological differences, serving as a universal language that unites communities and strengthens national integration. 

The evening featured a series of captivating Manipuri performances, including Maybe Jagoi, a ritual dance performed during the Lai Haraoba festival symbolizing the creation process; the dynamic Sword Dance, showcasing martial artistry; Lai Haraoba, reflecting devotion and prayer for peace and prosperity; the energetic Stick Dance, demonstrating balance and agility; and Basantarasa (Ras Leela), a classical Vaishnavite devotional dance depicting Lord Krishna, Radha, and the Gopis in a celebration of divine love.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to the artists, dignitaries, and audience for their support and participation. The evening reaffirmed the Centre’s core message that “Art destroys ego and fosters harmony,” highlighting culture as a powerful bridge for peace and unity in diversity.
