Easter Celebration Turns into Condolence Meeting in Honor of Pope Francis

On 21st April 2025, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI), in collaboration with the Chavara Cultural Centre, Delhi, organized a solemn Condolence Meeting in Honor of Pope Francis. Originally planned as an Easter celebration, the programme was reverently transformed into a memorial gathering following the passing of the Holy Father. The evening became a profound tribute to his life of humility, compassion, and tireless commitment to peace, fraternity, and universal brotherhood.

The gathering witnessed the presence of around ten ambassadors representing various nations, including Ireland, Malta, Peru, Rwanda, Guatemala, Portugal, and other diplomatic missions. They joined archbishops, bishops, clergy, and nine distinguished religious leaders from various faith traditions, along with members of civil society, in expressing solidarity and heartfelt respect.

Rev. Dr. Fr. Roby Kannamchirayil CMI welcomed the dignitaries and described the occasion as a “celebration of hope,” recalling Pope Francis as a shepherd who constantly reminded the world that mercy is stronger than division and love greater than fear. During the homage ceremony, archbishops, bishops, diplomats, and interreligious representatives offered floral tributes before the portrait of Pope Francis, honoring his legacy of simplicity and service.

In their addresses, the ambassadors paid moving tributes, remembering him as a global moral voice who championed the dignity of the poor, advocated for migrants and refugees, called for ecological responsibility through Laudato Si’, and tirelessly promoted interfaith dialogue and reconciliation among nations. They acknowledged his courage in confronting injustice and his ability to unite people across religious and cultural divides.

Interreligious prayers were offered by representatives of Judaism, Zoroastrianism, Buddhism, and other faith traditions, symbolizing the Pope’s unwavering commitment to dialogue and mutual respect. Each prayer echoed themes central to his papacy — compassion, forgiveness, humility, and the vision of humanity as one family.

The evening was further enriched by cultural and musical tributes, including moving performances by Christ University students and the vibrant musical ensemble Chavara Beats, along with other artists. These performances beautifully celebrated Pope Francis’s enduring message of hope, peace, and joy.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Rev. Dr. Matthew Koyil, Deputy Secretary General of CBCI, who expressed gratitude to all ambassadors, religious leaders, and participants for their solidarity and presence.
