Focus on Sikhism
3 February 2022 | Chavara Cultural Centre, Delhi
The third day of the series once again strengthened the vision of the Chavara Cultural Centre to build unity in diversity through dialogue, understanding, and cultural exchange.
The session concluded with words of appreciation to all speakers and participants, reaffirming the importance of continued interfaith dialogue and collaborative efforts in promoting peace and harmony across communities.
The programme emphasized the importance of respecting differences without sacrificing one’s uniqueness. Reference was made to global interfaith initiatives and organizations working toward peaceful coexistence, reinforcing the idea that genuine, selfless love can transform human minds and societies by fostering truth, justice, equality, and fraternity.
The session began with an introduction to Sikhism, an Indian faith that originated in the Punjab region in the 15th century. The hosts outlined its core principles: meditation and devotion to one Creator, truthful living, and selfless service to humanity. Sikhism upholds values such as honesty, compassion, humility, generosity, integrity, spirituality, and service — principles that guide individuals toward harmonious coexistence.
A student panel from Christ College of Science and Management, Karnataka, presented reflections on Sikhism’s core concepts. They explored love as the path to overcoming ego, truth as righteous living, justice as moral responsibility, equality as taught by Guru Nanak against all forms of discrimination, and the vibrant artistic heritage of Sikh culture, including Punjabi folk music and dance forms such as Bhangra and Giddha.
The session was enriched by the presence of eminent speakers, including Mukhtiar Singh Asal, Chairman of the International Council and former chief envoy of the Punjab Chief Minister, who inaugurated the programme and was recognized for his efforts in promoting peace. Harman Singh Sathi, a youth leader and member of Gurudwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha, inspired participants with his motivating presence. Tanya Saplao, Liaison Officer for United Religions Initiative (URI) North India, highlighted the role of youth engagement in building social and spiritual harmony.
