World Interfaith Harmony Week 2024
Art and Culture in Hinduism: Pathways to Peace and Harmony
01 February 2024
Organised by Chavara Cultural Centre, Delhi
As part of World Interfaith Harmony Week 2024, the Chavara Cultural Centre, Delhi featured a reflective presentation on the role of art and culture in promoting peace and harmony within Hinduism. The session, presented by Smt. Pooja from DivineVlog, explored how Hindu artistic traditions serve as profound spiritual tools for refining the human mind and fostering communion with the divine.
The presentation emphasized art as a “divine way of bringing order amidst chaos,” illustrating how sacred hymns such as the Shiva Tandava and devotional narratives like Krishna Leela channel energy toward love, devotion, and spiritual upliftment. Art, in this understanding, is not merely aesthetic expression but a transformative discipline that purifies thought and cultivates inner harmony.
Various art forms—music, dance, architecture, painting, and sculpture—were described as spiritual disciplines that guide individuals toward self-realization. The lives of mystics such as Mirabai, Tulsidas, and Tukaram were highlighted as examples of how immersion in artistic devotion leads to divine ecstasy and deeper spiritual awareness.
The session also reflected on the dynamic and inclusive nature of Hindu art, noting its historical openness to influences from Persian, Arabic, Turkish, Greek, Roman, and Chinese traditions. This fusion has enriched Hindu artistic heritage while preserving its spiritual essence, demonstrating how cultural exchange can strengthen harmony rather than dilute identity.
Hindu temple architecture and sacred paintings were presented as symbolic expressions of cosmic order and divine presence. Through vibrant imagery and scriptural themes, concepts such as karma, dharma, and bhakti are communicated in ways that inspire moral living and spiritual reflection. Hindu literature, grounded in Sanatana Dharma and Vedanta, was described as a guiding force promoting peace, righteousness, and inclusivity.
The presentation concluded by affirming Hinduism’s hallmark values of tolerance, openness, and mutual coexistence. The session beautifully illustrated how art and culture, when rooted in spirituality, become powerful instruments of harmony—aligning with the broader vision of World Interfaith Harmony Week to build bridges of understanding among diverse faith traditions.
